What to do with this?

Fashionistas help!! This jacket needs something. I am glad I made this mock-up. I am not diggin' the look on me. It looks like it needs to be a little longer. I had an idea to add a zip on peplum, but I really like the idea of a cropped jacket. Maybe it just isn't fitted enough? Should I take a little ease out of the side seams and see if I like it? Or maybe tack some fabric along the bottom edge and see if the longer length helps? The back neckline is too low and too scooped as well. I feel my mojo slipping... I would rather be sewing spring dresses, but I don't want another UFO hanging around my sewing room. The pictures are cell phone pictures and not the best, but if you click them, they get bigger. What should I do with this?

  1. Debra gee I don't know. I wouldn't like it off the shoulders like that - I'd feel it was always going to come off or restrict my raising my arms. I think the cropped length isn't terrible - it emphasizes your waist in a good way.

It's giving off more of a shawl vibe, not a jacket vibe. Is that what's bugging you?

  2. i like the jacket and the length, it works well with the skirt proportions, but I think there is something going on with the collar - great collar but it seems too tight, or is a little too low, it doesn't fall properly. What I mean is that when you move your arm it distorts/pulls or slides? What about adding jacket length to the top part of the front and back bodice, so the collar sits a little higher? Just an idea. (It may be just 1/2" or 1" but it could improve the appearance)

I think, in general, the collar balances your hips - it looks really great! - you may just need to make some minor changes to the pattern.

  3. I love the neckline and collar, and I agree that the length is good and emphasizes your small waist. I'm not sure taking in the side seams would be a perfect solution, but maybe some back darts to shape it just a little?

  4. I love the jacket. I know you didn't ask about the skirt, but I don't like the length. It should be shorter or a long formal length. It looks odd to me. But if you're married to that length, go with a pump or slingback. Maybe it's the heavy shoe that's throwing me off.

  5. I really like the jacket and I think it looks good on you. If you are looking for a more fitted look, what about bust and back darts? That might help.

  6. I agree with Betsy V. and Marina v.K. The jacket length is perfect. I love the design of the collar, but I do think it needs to be raised to make it more of a jacket shape. I am so impressed you have designed this all yourself. You are on to a great looking jacket!
